A blood-based pregnancy test, which measures the concentration of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in the blood, is an accurate method of determining pregnancy. HCG is produced by the placenta shortly after fertilization, and is detectable in the blood at early stages of pregnancy. This test often provides reliable confirmation of pregnancy even before a home urine test turns positive.

Because of the sensitivity of the blood test, the presence of HCG can be detected as early as about 10 days after conception, making it one of the earliest methods of detecting pregnancy.
