Drugs and alcohol in hair
Do you wish, as part of a judicial investigation or driving record, to demonstrate abstinence from drugs or alcohol?
Hair analysis can be used to determine over a longer period of time whether there was drug or alcohol use. Drugs, medication and alcohol enter the bloodstream and pass through the hair cells, causing traces to be found in the hair follicles.
How is the taking of hair performed?
A hair strand of min. 3 cm – 6 cm is taken at the level of the main crown.
A segment of 50 mg is required per drug to be analyzed.
On average, hair grows 1 cm per month. To detect certain substances, hair is analyzed per cm. This reflects drug and alcohol use per month.
The following items will be questioned during the sampling:
Duration of abstinence which must be demonstrated
Any cosmetic treatment of the hair (dyeing, blonding…) will be noted. If the hair has been treated, it will be noted in the report, which may reduce the probative value of a negative result.
Caution:
To detect use, a hair sample of at least 3 centimeters and up to 6 centimeters is required. If the hair is shorter, it is not possible to go back as far in time, which affects the demonstration of the duration of abstinence.
In long-term users, traces of alcohol, medications and/or drugs may be detected in the hair over an extended period of time.
